NAIDOC

On Tuesday, the 8th of August, students had the opportunity to participate in a hands-on learning experience about our nation's history and the culture of Indigenous Australians for our NAIDOC Celebrations.

Students started off the day with a whole-school assembly, which involved the talented Wadumbah Aboriginal Dance Group demonstrating their impressive didgeridoo skills as students watched the storytelling through dance.

A morning tea was organised for the families of our Indigenous Australian students, where they had the chance to chat and converse with peers, families, and staff, while also enjoying some delicious food.

Our ESC then had the opportunity to learn and listen to Gina Williams & Guy Ghouse, who performed traditional songs in the Noongar language. Our students then joined in on a simply sweet rendition of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" in the language as well.

Our senior school students then helped prepare 800 kangaroo sausages to serve the school during lunchtime.

First Nations students from mainstream classes shared their culture with our middle school students through activities such as face painting and bracelet making.

Closing out our day, Year 10s, 11s, and 12s enjoyed a talk from local Noongar man Greg Nannup from Indigenous Tours WA, who shared his culture and stories about his ancestors and laws. Students learned about how the Noongar nation lived – from clothing designed from Kangaroo skin to keep them warm and cool, to bags, traps, and strings made from plants, and the methods of starting fires using a Balga (Grass Tree).

Our School acknowledges the land in which our students learn on the Whadjuk Noongar Country. We are grateful to learn about the history of the Indigenous people who cultivated this amazing place, and we pay our respects to the elders, past, present, and emerging for allowing us to flourish here..
