Cowan 7

As part of our Maths, Health and English curriculum, the Cowan 7 class recently went down and cooked in the Food Rooms.

After doing the planning in class to determine what we were cooking, how and why, we headed down to the Food Rooms which gave us access to appropriate health, safety and hygiene measures.

We created a number of pasta dishes, as well as a side salad and of course garlic bread. This gave students access to plenty of fresh and healthy ingredients which we were able to relate to the work we have been doing in class as part of the Health Curriculum where we have studied healthy lifestyles. Part of this has been looking at how we access the vitamins and nutrients that our bodies need to be able to efficiently function and in particular we referred to all the colours of vegetables in our salad, each one giving us different benefits that our body can access.

Upon returning to class, we costed out the dishes as part of our Maths program: breaking down the cost of each ingredient, working out how much the dish cost and then what it would cost per serve. We then compared this to store bought items costs (grocery shops and fast-food shops), to see what a better value for our money was. We then provided feedback on these findings as part of our English work, as well as evaluating our cooking experience: what our favourite parts were and of course what we could do even better next time!

Students enjoyed the learning experience and we will be doing more of these types of activities as the term progresses.
